See how #Ford and @JoseCuervo work together to give excess agave a second chance as potential car parts. #FarmToCarhttps://t.co/OmvRv11dSj

Why is a car company teaming up with a tequila-maker? It's all part of Ford's ongoing "farm-to-car mission." Using renewable materials, especially leftovers of agriculture that would otherwise be discarded, can make a huge difference to the environmental impact of a car. It can make vehicles lighter, reduce petroleum use, and lower carbon dioxide emissions.
And, like your parents always said, "waste not, want not."
Jose Cuervo grows millions of agave plants every year, but only uses the juicy nectar contained within its aloe-like leaves. After the leaves are pressed, a large amount of pulp is left over. This pulp, or agave fiber, may have exactly the sort of durable properties Ford is looking for to create composite bioplastics.
"Jose Cuervo is proud to be working with Ford to further develop our agave sustainability plan," said Sonia Espinola, director of heritage for Cuervo Foundation and master tequilera. "As the world’s No. 1-selling tequila, we could never have imagined the hundreds of agave plants we were cultivating as a small family business would eventually multiply to millions. This collaboration brings two great companies together to develop innovative, earth-conscious materials."
